  • Hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad resoundingly won Iran's election, preliminary official results showed on Saturday, but his moderate challenger alleged irregularities and claimed victory for himself.

The level of the incumbent's support, roughly twice as many votes as former Prime Minister Mirhossein Mousavi with most ballots counted, confounded analyst predictions of a tight race.

A bitterly fought campaign generated intense excitement inside Iran and strong interest around the world, with policymakers looking for signs of a change in Tehran's approach in a long-running row with the West over its nuclear ambitions.

Listing several complaints before official results were announced, Mousavi said many people had not been able to vote and that there had been a lack of ballot papers.

He also accused authorities of blocking text messaging, with which his campaign tried to reach young, urban voters.

"I am the definite winner of this presidential election," Mousavi told a news conference.

But the Islamic Republic's election commission said Ahmadinejad was ahead with 64.8 percent of the votes from Friday's presidential election in the world's fifth biggest oil exporter after more than 30 million ballots had been counted.

Mousavi had around 32 percent support, said the commission. Based on an Interior Ministry estimate of a maximum 80 percent turnout of Iran's 46 million eligible voters, he could not beat Ahmadinejad with the votes still to be counted.

The official news agency IRNA said: "Dr Ahmadinejad, by winning most votes ... has secured his victory." State media said final results would be announced at 10 a.m. (1:30 a.m. EDT).

Trita Parsi, president of the Washington-based National Iranian American Council, expressed disbelief at the wide margin in Ahmadinejad's favor.

"It is difficult to feel comfortable that this occurred without any cheating," Parsi said.

Speaking in Washington before the results were released, U.S. President Barack Obama said his administration was excited about the debate taking place in Iran and he hoped it would help the two countries to engage "in new ways."

    STREET SCUFFLES

Western capitals had hoped a victory for Mousavi could help ease tensions with the West, which is concerned about Tehran's nuclear plans, and improve chances of engagement with Obama, who has talked about a new start in ties with Tehran.

Now they will have to find a way to deal with Ahmadinejad's government if they want to make progress in defusing the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme.

The three-week election campaign was marked by mudslinging, with Ahmadinejad accusing his rivals of corruption. They said he was lying about the state of the economy.

It was unclear how Mousavi's supporters, who thronged the streets of Tehran nightly in the run-up to Friday's vote, might react to an Ahmadinejad victory. U.S. strategic intelligence group Stratfor called the situation "potentially explosive," with a considerable risk of unrest.

Scuffles broke out early on Saturday between police and chanting Mousavi supporters in a Tehran square, a Reuters witness said. Police say they have increased security across the capital to prevent any trouble. All gatherings have been banned until the publication of final results.

Shortly before voting ended, some Tehran residents said they were unable to make international phone calls and some Internet servers went down.

Ahmadinejad draws his bedrock support from rural areas or poorer big city neighborhoods. Mousavi enjoys strong backing in wealthier urban centers, and was expected to attract votes from women and young Iranians.

Two other candidates attracted only tiny voter support.

Long queues had formed at voting centers, after a heated campaign in which inflation -- officially around 15 percent -- and high unemployment were leading issues.

Ahmadinejad, 52, won power four years ago on a pledge to revive the values of the 1979 Islamic revolution. He has steadily built up Iran's nuclear programme, rejecting Western charges that it is aimed at building an atomic bomb, and stirred international outrage by denying the Holocaust and calling for Israel to be wiped from the map.

Mousavi, 67, rejects Western demands that Iran halt uranium enrichment but analysts say he would have brought a different approach to Iran-U.S. ties and talks on the nuclear issue. Ultimately, however, nuclear and foreign policy are determined by the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The United States has had no ties with Iran since shortly after the revolution but Obama said in Washington the United States had "tried to send a clear message that we think there is the possibility of change" in relations.

              • Massive protests over Iranian election

Riot police charged on protesters Saturday in Tehran as the Iranian government declared Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected president, sources said.

Both Ahmandinejad and his rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi, declared victory with Mousavi urging his supporters to stand firm in the face of a "dangerous charade," The New York Times reported Saturday.

"I am the absolute winner of the election by a very large margin," Mousavi said late Friday night.

Police with riot batons charged thousands of Mousavi supporters gathered in central Tehran Saturday, but it was unclear if there were serious injuries.

Iran's Interior Ministry gave Ahmadinejad 62.6 percent of the vote and Mousavi 33.7 percent, the BBC reported. The ministry said turnout was a record 85 percent of eligible voters, with more than 46 million people casting a ballot.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Resolution, Saturday praised the massive turnout as a "real feast which can guarantee the country's progress, national security and lasting joy," Iran's Press TV reported.

                          • Protests Greet Ahmadinejad Win in Iran: 'It's Not Possible!'

Iran's Interior Minister announced Saturday that incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won 63.29% of the vote in the nation's closely watched presidential poll. The announcement, greeted with widespread skepticism by Iranian opposition supporters and by foreign analysts, has brought thousands of people onto the streets where they have encountered a strong police presence and the threat of violence.

Rumors of vote rigging had been flying for hours before the official announcement. At about 11 p.m. Friday, less than an hour after polls closed, reformist challenger Mir-Hossein Mousavi held a press conference and declared that he knew - based on the observations of his campaign officials at polling booths - that he had won a majority of the vote. But rigging was already underway, said Mousavi, who warned that he and the people would stage mass protests if their votes were not respected.

Early results, which indicated a likely win for the incumbent, were released by the Interior Ministry shortly after midnight and broadcast on state television. Small groups of Ahmadinejad supporters gathered in various spots around the capital to hold spontaneous celebrations, waving his image and chanting, "Ahmadinejad is love."

But there was little love at Mousavi's campaign offices. At one office, the police broke up a large crowd of supporters with batons and closed down the building. At another, a group of basijis (pro-regime paramilitaries) took about 100 people hostage before being overpowered by Mousavi supporters.

By Saturday morning, the most often repeated exclamation in Tehran was: "It's not possible!"

Groups of protestors headed to the city's squares and main streets, where they faced regular beatings by police using batons and pepper spray. Eyewitnesses say the police beat a young man to death north of Vanak Square. (See TIME's photos of 2009 protests around the globe)

At about 5 p.m., two crowds of several hundred people - both Mousavi and Ahmadinejad supporters - gathered in front of the Ministry of the Interior, just off Jahad Square in central Tehran. They were separated by police lines, but chanting back and forth as they had all week. Suddenly, the police charged the Mousavi supporters. There were two ranks of police on motorcycles, two policemen per bike, dressed in body armor that made them look like starship troopers. They charged into the crowd, brandishing billy clubs, followed by police on foot, with clubs and shields.

The police were firm but not brutal. They pushed the crowd, rather than swinging at it. Still, people were knocked down; one woman in a chador was down in the street, screaming in pain as she was dragged toward the sidewalk by her husband.

The Mousavi supporters were pushed down the street several blocks, and into side streets. When the police retreated, they re-gathered, chanting "Death to the Dictator" and "Mousavi, We'll Protect You" and "Iran looks like Palestine" (the last, an apparent reference to the constant scenes of similarly dressed Israeli police dispersing Palestinian rock-throwers). No rocks were thrown, only a few plastic water bottles. Several dumpsters were overturned and set on fire.

Mousavi supporters have been comparing stories, wondering how their man could have lost. "On a bus yesterday," offered one middle-aged man, "we took a count. Out of the people on the bus, 33 said they voted for Mousavi, and 11 said they voted for Ahmadinejad." The president prides himself on having the support of economically less privileged people - exactly the people who ride on buses and in shared taxis.

Another young man, who said he was an observer at a polling station in Tehran's Region 7, said out of about 1,500 votes there, 988 were for Moussavi, 391 for Ahmadinejad, and the rest for the remaining two candidates. "I have no doubt they've reversed the vote count. They have given Mousavi's vote to the sitting president and vice versa," he said.

A group of young men said they had talked to their families in the provinces, including Kurdish Kermanshah, Azeri Oroumiyeh and Ardeblil. Mohsen, 23, said, "Everyone in Tabriz voted for Mousavi. The official count says a majority for Ahmadinejad. That's not possible." Mehdi, 27, chimed in, "Even if just Karroubi's family in Lorestan had voted for him, he would have won more than 300,000 votes."

More serious allegations came from officials involved in the various reformist candidates' campaigns. Mohammad-Ali Abtahi, part of opposition figure Mehdi Karroubi's campaign, pointed out that the government "announced a wholesale figure of 70% for Ahmadinejad last night, as opposed to breaking it down province by province as they usually do." The first figures were announced shortly after voting closed, he added. A breakdown of how people in each city and province voted has not been released yet.

At the Mousavi headquarters, former Interior Minister Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour protested that Mousavi observers had not gained access to many of the polling centers. He also said that in Tabriz, Mousavi's birthplace, many of the polling stations had run out of ballots only two hours after opening, even though about 59 million ballots had been printed by the government, about 13 million more than the number of eligible voters.

Mohtashamipour and others also complain that communications on voting day were hampered. Text messaging, a main means of communication among supporters of the challengers, and several Internet sites, were blocked.

Mousavi and Karroubi have both released statements condemning the results. Mousavi had planned to give a press conference, but his wife Zahra Rahnavard said he has been ordered to stay in his house. "The actions of these untrustworthy people in charge are nothing but a destabilization of the dignity of the sacredness of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the sovereignty of lies and despotism," Mousavi wrote on his website. Karroubi said he would not remain silent in the face of this "amateur engineering of the votes."

Faced with questions about vote tampering, Interior Minister Sadegh Mahsouli denied the vote rigging allegations and said the election was clean and fair. As the Minister praised the "brilliant results," more protestors gathered outside the Interior Ministry building

Iran's Supreme leader, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, released a statement through state television in which he congratulated Iranians for having proven their "great worth," and warned people to be aware that the "enemy" planned street chaos.

Actually, Iran democratically elected a president who was ousted by the US and the UK, when they installed the dictator, the Shah of Iran. Iran would be in a very different position today had the US not done that, and left democratic (at that time) Iran alone. BTW, Obama's economic team are hardly socialist - check them out.

Your statement has just enough factual information to maintain some level of truthiness, but the overall implication is a myth, carefully cultivated by the Iranian government for the last decade or so, to further their agenda. It is very disturbing to hear it repeated so often as fact, particularly by certain members of the American media. The CIA DID NOT overthrow a democratically-elected government to install the Shah as dictator (and no, sorry, Wikipedia is not a valid source).

Dr. Mossadegh may have been elected democratically, but he made himself a dictator through increasing levels of corruption, eliminating his opponents, and stealing an election. The Shah was the consitutional ruler of Iran long before the US ever became involved, until PM Mossadegh exiled him illegally, that is. Look at the timeline. The CIA was only 6 years old in 1953. How many agents do you think we had in Iran then? 3? 4? The CIA can do some amazing things, but to overthrow a supposedly popular, legitimate government of a country of 30-40 million people, with a handful of agents, in 1953??? Come on, THINK people.
